Chapter 15

Purushottama Yoga

"The Yoga of the Supreme Person"

Chapter 15 reveals Krushna as Purushottama - the Supreme Person who transcends both the fallible and infallible. Using the metaphor of an inverted tree, Krushna describes the material world and the path to liberation.

🌳 The Inverted Banyan Tree

The material world is compared to an inverted banyan tree with roots upward and branches downward
The roots represent Brahman (the spiritual source), branches are the material manifestations
The leaves are the Vedic hymns; one who knows this tree knows the Vedas
This tree must be cut down with the axe of detachment to achieve liberation
Once cut, one should surrender to the Supreme from whom this ancient activity has expanded

"The real form of this tree cannot be perceived in this world. No one can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. But with determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weapon of detachment." (Verse 3)

👁️ The Individual Soul in the Body

The individual soul is a fragment of Krushna's eternal, spiritual nature
In the material world, this soul struggles with the six senses (five senses plus the mind)
When the soul changes bodies, it carries its mental conception and senses like wind carrying aromas
The soul enjoys material experiences through the ear, eye, tongue, nose, skin, and mind
The foolish cannot understand the soul's transmigration, but those with divine vision can perceive it

"The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another as the air carries aromas. Thus he takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another." (Verse 8)

☀️ Krushna as the Source of All Energy

Krushna provides light to the sun, moon, and fire - He is the source of all illumination
He enters the earth and maintains all beings with His energy
As the moon, He nourishes all plants and vegetables
As the fire of digestion, He helps digest all food in the bodies of living beings
He is present in the heart of everyone as memory, knowledge, and forgetfulness

"The splendor of the sun, which dissipates the darkness of this whole world, comes from Me. And the splendor of the moon and the splendor of fire are also from Me." (Verse 12)

📜 Krushna in the Vedas

Krushna is present in the heart as the Supersoul (Paramatma)
He is the compiler of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas
All Vedic knowledge ultimately points toward understanding Krushna
Through the Vedas, Krushna can be known and reached
He is both the goal and the giver of Vedic knowledge

"By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedanta, and I am the knower of the Vedas." (Verse 15)

👑 The Supreme Person (Purushottama)

There are two types of beings: the fallible (kshara) and the infallible (akshara)
All living entities are fallible, while the liberated souls are infallible
Beyond both is the Supreme Personality - Purushottama
Krushna is this Supreme Person who enters and maintains the three worlds
One who knows Krushna as Purushottama knows everything and engages in His devotional service

"Because I am transcendental, beyond both the fallible and the infallible, and because I am the greatest, I am celebrated both in the world and in the Vedas as that Supreme Person." (Verse 18)
